Everett to Leavenworth is the pure US 2 drive, trestle to Tumwater Canyon, the whole Stevens Pass corridor in one run. It breaks into three acts: the Snohomish valley flats, the Skykomish River canyon, and the Wenatchee River descent. Drivers from Snohomish County and the north Sound run this drive year round for skiing, for Leavenworth weekends, and for the east side sun that starts, reliably, somewhere around the summit even when Everett is socked in gray.
Everett to Monroe on the valley floor, two lane highway through Snohomish farmland, the platoon segment.
Monroe to Skykomish up the Skykomish River canyon, through Sultan, Gold Bar, Index, and Baring, the road narrowing and the walls rising.
Skykomish to the summit, the steepest sustained climbing on the corridor, chain country in winter.
Summit to Leavenworth through Coles Corner and Tumwater Canyon, the east side unwinding into orchard country light.
Fuel and chains are an Everett and Monroe decision; after Gold Bar the corridor is committed mountain road. The cameras on this site line the whole route in milepost order, so a two minute scan before leaving Everett shows you the trestle, the canyon, the summit, and the canyon on the other side, which is more certainty than any single forecast can give you.
