Leavenworth is the Bavarian themed village in the Wenatchee River valley and the biggest destination on the US 2 corridor, a former logging and railroad town that reinvented itself in the 1960s with alpine facades, festivals, and a main street built for strolling. For Stevens Pass drivers it is the reward on the east side: dinner, a bed, and a town that treats a snowy pass weekend as a business model. Oktoberfest, the Christmas lighting season, and ski weekends fill it to the walls.
US 2 runs along the river at the edge of town, and the Icicle Road and Front Street exits carry heavy local traffic in every season. The drive from Leavenworth back over the pass is the Sunday evening ritual of half the Seattle area, so westbound queues on the pass often trace back to a full town letting out. Tumwater Canyon, the narrow river gorge just west of Leavenworth, is one of the most beautiful and most weather exposed stretches of the corridor, steep walls, fast water, and ice that forms early in the shade.
